Oh what gems
One of the things I love about traveling is the things you see, things you learn and the crazy shit you encounter! As a former small restaurant owner in Kansas, and dealing with the nightmares of our health codes I find Kentucky almost enlightening and entertaining!
Kansas is a pain in the ass on all things. Just ask anyone that has owned a business of any type in Kansas. Nothing, in my opinion, is business friendly or designed to help the business owner. The hoops we have to jump through for this requirement or that regulation about puts small businesses out of business. For example, a good chunk of places are limited on what can they serve based on the hood that is in the kitchen to allow for cooking. I know a few places that would love to serve burgers if they just had a $15,000 hood that Kansas requires. (Not to mention install and rest that goes with)
Not here in Kentucky! Each time I visit a local business I about crap. I am literally sitting here at lunch at the most adorable hamburger place in Covington, KY called Herb and Thelma’s. Impressive their old skool systems and this adorable little time capsule of a place that takes you back in time.
The owner and his son work the place in its entirety, and immediately learned Shannon’s name and used it along with all other customers repeatedly over the visit. Quite impressive their ability to remember and acknowledge the number of people that come in over a day. Fun to watch the people come in and out, greeted by Ethan and Joe and cooked a fine, old time simple hamburger with no fixings, and your choice of grippos chips if you choose to add with your all cash purchase. So brilliant all around. Only drawback is you may smell like fried hamburgers for the next week if you wear in a jacket in. I couldn’t take the smell of myself so an outfit change was in order for me!
Something else I have to share about this adventure in another part of the country is the views! They are beyond beautiful! I haven’t spent much time downtown Cincinnati until the last few years and never on the Kentucky side except for the occasional coffee and target run. Getting to explore and see the views running errands and learning the area I fall more and more in love with where I chose. As a Kansas girl, these views are beyond incredible.
Shannon makes fun of that this Kansas girl has never seen hills and hollows and I think she might be right! I have seen a lot of places in this world and for a city skyline, this is hard to beat! Because of the Ohio river and the “seven hills” it allows for you to have a spectacular view of the city from all angles and view points on a hill or a bridge. It’s cool as shit! I love the drives of simple errands.
Heading off to Vegas next week. Shannon has furniture mart so going to tag along and of course try and catch up with friends out there. Then back to Kansas for first Friday weekend and to deal with some frozen pipes in noto. I know the cold is just ridiculous and hard on everything and of course found a broken pipe yesterday.
Hopefully you are staying warm and safe and off the roads when needed. Fortunately we haven’t had any major precipitation here so just blustery cold! Until next Friday…
Xoxo
